Alexis Grivas, as he modestly proclaims himself, is not one of the great cinematographers in Greece.
However, he was a masterful handheld shots cameraman who became an accomplished photographer in Mexico, in the 70s and, of course, he had a long career as a delegate to the Film Festivals of Cannes, Berlin and Venice.
He managed to combine theory with practice, in an unprecedented way, not only in Greek, but in world cinema.
Alexis talked like a copious stream, in the picture. Among other things, I will not forget his description about being the first cameraman in the world to have filmed Augusto Pinochet’s interview, only three days after the coup and the death of Salvador Allende; as well as his touching and humorous anecdotes about his friendship with Luis Buñuel.
Alexis is a very good friend of mine (despite his gauche and stern criticism); I respect and admire him very much. We had the chance to work together once, for the film in the series “Mathimata-Pathimata”.
Claudio Bolivar was the cameraman of the interview.
Pantelis Voulgaris (who has worked with all six cinematographers in the series), as well as Tassos Psarras, discusses their respective collaborations with Grivas.
