Giorgos Panousopoulos is very well-known as a filmmaker, but before that, he had an outstanding career as a cinematographer.
He was the first one in Greece to use a handheld camera and he pushed the medium to the limit, playing with overexposure.
He made several noteworthy films, such as Pantelis Voulgaris’ “Happy Day”, “Evridiki BA 2037”, by Nikos Nikolaidis, “Aldebaran”, by Andreas Thomopoulos, as well as the films he made with his companions, Nikos Perakis and Yorgos Tsemberopoulos, in the 80s, after he had switched to filmmaking.
I had always admired Panousopoulos. An innovator, a great cinematographer, an unpredictable man and one of the few Greek cinematographers (or perhaps the only one) who managed to develop into an even better filmmaker.
In the picture he is truthful and straightforward, as always; and full of life.
