Nikos Kavoukidis is a brilliant cinematographer. But further than that, and on a personal note, he is a man who has been by my side, in almost every film I have made, by offering me equipment, lights, a camera, etc.
And that was not special treatment. For about fifty years he has supported Greek filmmakers, by generously keeping the door of his equipment room open for them.
Nikos Kavoukidis has always succeeded in balancing diverse collaborations.
Based on the professional legacy of his father, he became one of the main cinematographers working for Finos, while at the same time, he worked with many prominent filmmakers of the New Greek Cinema in their first and iconic pictures.
He could be great, working in advertising and also being the longterm cinematographer for the films of Nikos Koundouros.
His great contribution to the documentary genre should not be left out either; not only because of his historic documentary film “Martyries” (i.e Testimonies), but also for the treasure of precious footage he had filmed from the mid 1960s until 2012.
In the film he refers to all these in detail and he proves to be a gifted storyteller, with a sense of humor and an open mind.
We filmed him together with Claudio Bolivar, while Pantelis Voulgaris and Nikos Koundouros discuss him and his work.
